what is galvanising & powder coating?
Why It Matters for Your Wrought Iron Gates & Railings
So, What Exactly Is Galvanising?
Galvanising (also called hot dip galvanising) is a proven industrial process that coats steel or wrought iron with a thick layer of zinc.
The metal is thoroughly cleaned, then fully immersed in a bath of molten zinc at around 450°C.
This creates a series of strong zinc-iron alloy layers that bond metallurgically to the steel — it’s not just a surface coating, it becomes part of the metal itself.
This protective zinc layer acts as a barrier against moisture, oxygen, and the elements that cause rust.
Galvanising + Powder Coating = The Ultimate Finish
- Sacrificial protection — Zinc is more reactive than steel. If the coating gets scratched or damaged, the zinc corrodes first (sacrifices itself) to protect the underlying iron or steel
- Full coverage — Because the gate is dipped, galvanising protects every surface, including inside hollow sections, joints, and welds — areas that paint or powder coating alone often miss.
- Self-healing — Small scratches naturally form protective zinc compounds that help seal the area.
- Long lifespan — In most UK environments, a properly galvanised coating can last 20 years or more with little to no maintenance.
